The Passer By

Beneath a lighted upper room, I heard a whispered sigh,

“Come eat and drink, this is for you! “

As I was passing by

 

From out a garden by my way, a muffled anguished cry-

A man knelt sobbing on the ground.

As I went passing by

 

A lonely man stood bruised and torn,

The crowed screamed “Crucify!”

I wondered what his crime had been.

As I passed quickly by

 

I saw a man nailed to a cross.

And left up there to die!

I heard the jeering of the mob.

‘But I was passing by.

 

“Oh, does it nothing mean to you?” I heard his awful cry.

His words they pierced me through and through

As I was passing by
